The Welsh Awards 2007 Were A Great Success

Red Dragon is thrilled that the Welsh Awards, supported by Black Horse Finance, were a great success.

Red Dragon awarded local community heroes at its prestigious Welsh Awards event amongst a celebrity- packed audience including Torchwood Beauty Eve Miles.

The event celebrated it’s 10th birthday this year and raised over £50,000, the largest sum ever raised for Red Dragon’s Help A South Wales Child

Red Dragon’s Outstanding Teachers Award was presented to Bev Hopkins from Barry for giving up endless hours of her free time to fundraise for Palmerston Primary School and helping to facilitate a sports programme for children who would otherwise be unable to participate in sport.

Red Dragon’s Local Hero Award was presented to Sheila Gill from Newport. Over the last twenty-five years, Sheila has raised tens of thousand of pounds for St. Anne’s Hospice in Newport, through hard work and dedication.  Sheila is rarely seen without a raffle book and has personally supported individuals and families helping purchase specialist equipment to enrich their lives.

Red Dragon’s Inspirational Young Person Award was awarded to a very special young man, Daniel Taylor. Despite being partially sighted, Daniel has been a great example to his peers, participating in a number of performances and has been a real encouragement to other children that face similar challenges.

Help A South Wales Child's 10th Birthday Award was awarded to the Young Carers Project, Rhondda and Taff Ely.  The 10th Birthday Award recognises the outstanding work of groups that the charity supports. The Young Carers Project supports children that work tirelessly caring for a relative who have a long term illness, disability, mental health or substance misuse problems. They create an outlet for young carers to interact and experience the joys of childhood without their daily responsibilities.

During the awards, the lucky guests got to see live performances from Simon Webbe and Booty Luv

Commenting on the event, Red Dragon’s Help A South Wales Child Charity Manager, Lisa Buckley enthused:

“This years awards were fantastic. The magical setting of the No Fit State Circus really added to the celebratory feel of the evening.  In addition to recognising individuals that have gone well beyond the call of duty, raising over £50,000 in one evening is brilliant.”
